Huawei launches ICT Skill Competition in Oman

Building on the huge success of its 2017 debut in the region, the second edition of Huawei Middle East ICT Skill Competition aims to nurture local ICT talent and develop the next generation of ICT leaders in Oman. In partnership with Ministry of Manpower and Higher College of Technology, Huawei launched the competition in the Sultanate and invited universities and students to register on the competition website before Sep 15th.

Huawei, the leading global ICT solutions provider, designed the competition to promote a generation of ICT future leaders to lead Oman’s digital transformation and help achieve the Oman Vision 2020 and Future Vision (2040) to move into the intelligent fully connected world.

The competition will run in Oman and nine other countries, and aims to increase national ICT competitiveness and promote innovation and creativity, a staple to build a knowledge-based economy.

Throughout the competition phases, students will gain knowledge and experience in the latest ICT technologies through course material on advanced IP and IT and offers them a glimpse of 5G technology which is set to disrupt the way business is carried out and people interact.

“Over the years, we have been committed to knowledge transfer in the markets in which we operate through several CSR initiatives that train and support the youth. As we pursue our new vision for an intelligent world where every person, home and organization is fully connected, it is time to nurture a generation of ICT leaders that are capable of moving their countries into the next stage of digital transformation,” said Mr. Leo Hong, CEO, Huawei Oman.

“Through the ICT Skill Competition, Huawei shares years of experience and practical knowledge as it aims to bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace. Working with universities and local government authorities, the competition will be a stepping stone for local ICT talent to increase their employability and grow into experts that will make an intelligent, fully connected world a reality in their countries,” Mr. Hong said.

The top skilled teams participating from Oman will advance to the Nationals stage, which will take place in November 2018. National winners from Oman and other participating countries will receive an all-expense paid immersion trip to Huawei’s global headquarters in China in November this year. This will give them an unrivalled exposure to leading global ICT expertise, an opportunity to meet the brand’s leadership and a priceless cultural experience and knowledge exchange. The international finalists will receive certificates, trophies, prizes and a top prize of US$ 30,000 for the winning team, in addition to employment opportunities at Huawei for the most outstanding candidates. The trip will provide participants with real life experiences in the state-of-the-art Huawei laboratories, R&D centers and facilities, and will equip them to tackle complex challenges in areas such as cloud computing, IoT, and network security by taking advantage of Huawei experts’ insights and opinions. In addition to technical training, the finalists will also be engaged in cultural learning, visits to heritage sites and exposure to the Chinese language.

In the Middle East, the competition is a critical initiative for enhancing the quality of future ICT professionals who are expected to lead the ICT industry into the future by embracing the digital transformation. The ICT Skill Competition is specifically designed to prepare this generation for such a responsibility.

In 2017, all the top colleges and universities across ten countries the Middle East were invited to participate. 14 ministries partnered with Huawei for the competition. 121 universities were involved and 10,285 students registered. A team of three students from Lebanese University in Beirut walked away with the first prize. The winners were selected after six months of qualifying rounds coupled with extensive learning experiences.
